Girls build LA
G.E.M.S. is a group in the Girls Build LA program. Our goal is to assist the elderly with technology. This will help them stay more connected with the rest of the world.
After researching we found that the elderly easily become separated and isolated from society. They aren't always the best at keeping up with new technology, which often leads to them being forgotten or left out of their friends and families lives.
Our group believes that the elderly population should be given more opportunities to connect with the world as it is right now and to stay more in touch with their family.

Our First Mindset
Our first mission statement went something like this:
"Our goal is to help the elderly community with technological literacy. We wanted to design tutorials and apps on various internet basics like ride sharing apps and social media".
Little did we know, this would change over time.
Next Steps
We decided to contact as many retirement communities as possible. The retirement community Magnolia Gardens accepted our proposal. When we went to present them with a needs analysis on their technology needs, it became clear that the residents had very little or any exposure to technology. We would start from the beginning and help them in any way possible.
Getting to Our Current Mission Statement
Our first visit was revolutionary. After being partnered up and spending some time hanging out with them, we learned that they just needed someone to talk to. Some people hadn't had visitors in month or ever and they were eager to participate and see what we had to offer. We soon realized that instead of teaching them how to use technology to connect with the outside world, we could use technology to enhance our one on one connection with them.
Our Current Mission Statement:
G.E.M.S are committed to using to technology to enhance the world of others around us. In order to be successful we need the ability to adapt to different situations, use empathy to understand others points of view, and technology to create meaningful experiences for elderly in our community.
