The Girls Build LA Program is a program created to try and empower young girls to use new skills (such as STEM or technology) to help their communities and become more involved. The goal of the team from George K. Porter Magnet Middle School, G.E.M.S., is to help the elderly become more familiar with technology. We want to help them become less isolated and use technology to relive memories and create new ones.
Our school, George K. Porter Middle School and Gifted Magnet, was one of the lucky chosen schools to participate in the Girls Build LA Program. Every small detail, from our group's logo to the way the finances are managed, are made through the help from our mentors, but are the fruits of labor of the students.
This program was made to help empower young girls. In doing so, our mentors decided to allow us to take the main lead on what we wanted to do - just providing ideas and helping us when we were a little confused. In doing so, we acted more independently and can feel more proud of what we have done: because we, the students, did it almost 100% by ourselves. We can feel that we really did make a difference in our community and find a way to change others' opinions of the elderly.
